TRUMP vs. IRAN

05-01-2020

The assassination of  Iranian General Quassem Soleimani by a surgical strike on the order of US President Trump is world news, for a few days. The comments on this act are as can be expected. The Americans, depending on their politcal views, are proud or puzzled. The Iranians announce revenge and the Europeans plead for de-escalation.  I shall refrain from joining the fruitless debate between opinions, and limit myself to two background notes:

The first one can be found in the Prologue to my book: W.ESTERN COOPERATION. Origin and History. Volume III in my series Footprints of the 20th. century (third edition). The Islamic Republic of Iran, since its inception in 1979,has organised  international terrorist operations by itself. The General himself played a leading role in these operations in the Middle East, in Yemen, against Israel, in  Lebanon and in Iraq and in support of Assad's regime in Syria. From the American perspective, the strike against Soleimani was a sequel to the elimination of Osama Bin Laden and the leader of the Islamic State.

The second one, also discussed in my book, has to do with the decision of former President Bush in 2003 to invade Iraq. Together with the war against terrorism in 2001 as a response to 9/11, the decisions of President Bush put the U.S. on a risky strategy of confrontation rather than mediation in the troublesome and chaotic Middle East, more and more divided between Sunni-Islam and Shiíte Islam regimes. America and the West have a long history - in fact since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 - of mismanagement of Middle East conflicts based on the illusion of Westernization an democratization of the successor states to the Ottoman Empire.

European Unification into the Twenty First Century

Footprints of the 20th Century - Third Edition

Description

The story of European Unification is fascinating. In 1950, two sworn enemies – France and Germany – decide to seek reconciliation and European federal unity. As a first step, they created the European Coal and Steel Community together with Italy and the Benelux countries. The fathers of this new Europe were visionary persons. Does today`s student or scholar still know who Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, Alcide de Gasperi or Willem Beyen were and what they stood for?

Western Cooperation

Footprints of the 20th Century - Third Edition

Description

For the study of international relations, knowledge of the history of Western Cooperation in the Twentieth Century is essential. The third volume reviews the broader history from America’s entry in the First World War in 1917 and the start of the American Era in international relations one hundred years ago, to the inauguration of President Trump in 2017.
