In case President Trump, the self-proclaimed hero deal-maker, thinks he can convince Putin to end the agressive war against Ukraine, he should read Robert Verkaik's recent book: "THE TRAITOR OF ARNHEM", World War II's Greatest Betrayal and the moment That Changed History Forever. Paperback edition 2025. The Second World War was fought and won by an alliance of the United States, Great Britain and the Sovietunion. His (belated) carefull analysis proves that Stalin - Putin's beloved predecessor - ordered his secret police (NKVD/KGB) to inform the Nazi-German military of the British launch operation Market Garden. As a consequence the airborn operation failed and the allied forces failed to cross the Rhine near Arnhem (until April 1945). Holland above the rivers was liberated only in May 1945. Geostrategically, the consequences were far more lasting. Soviet armies reached Berlin before the Western Allied Forces and Europe would be divided between East and West until 1990.
Norman Davies (in Europe a History, p.1028) rightly considered the formation of Grand Alliance of 1941 "every bit as shocking as that of the Nazi-Soviet partnersip two years earlier".
